power up

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja
PS2 £30 Atari

this fighting fest submerges you into a realm where ninjas are the ultimate power.
indent.gif (832 bytes)As you’d expect from a fighting game, your reason for being is to KO your opponents by completing a bewildering combination of attacks and blocks and using any handy object lying around.
indent.gif (832 bytes)Moves-wise the game can be as easy or as complex as you want — there are buttons allocated for jumps, throws, melee attack and special attack, but you can accomplish double jumps, spins and dashes.
indent.gif (832 bytes)Then there’s the mighty kawarimi no jutsu move, which allows you to teleport behind your opponent and catch them off-guard.
indent.gif (832 bytes)There are stacks of characters (some of which are changeable) and a variety of different modes to tinker with, including an arcade mode called Free Battle, where you can leap in and take on any unlocked character you want.
indent.gif (832 bytes)For those who want a bit more story and structure, there’s the main story mode, Scenario, where a different story unfolds for each character. They provide a mild diversion and the fighting rocks.
indent.gif (832 bytes)Mission mode lets you take on fights with specific aims, such as completing a battle with a certain amount of health left. Success in these missions gives you access to cash so you can unlock extras.
indent.gif (832 bytes)Graphics-wise the game is strikingly Manga-esque, with smart fighting environments and a hand-drawn feel that works really well.
indent.gif (832 bytes)With stacks of characters, heaps of environments and lashings of great moves, fighting fans of all types should find something to get excited about with this one. Great fun!
