Call for referees to lay off Lithuanian
Hearts boss dives to Miko’s defence
By Danny Stewart
CSABA LASZLO last night appealed to Scottish referees to lay off Saulius Mikoliunas.
The controversial forward was sent off for the third time against Rangers yesterday,
lasting just seven minutes as a substitute before being dismissed for his second bookable offence.
His first caution was for diving and that can only add to the Lithuanian’s notoriety that has
followed him since he dived to earn his country a penalty against Scotland last year.
“Everybody must have a second chance,” said Hearts boss
Laszlo.
“I have not had the chance to study Saulius’ yellow card yet but I know what it was for.
Reputation
“I do think Saulius’ reputation goes before him.
“We were not pleased with what happened but the point that upset me most was the fact my player went on and got a second card.
“You have to be aware of the situation and rein your aggression in.
“Saulius has committed a foul in an area of the pitch where it was not necessary.
“Because of that, I have spoken to him.”
As Lazlo admitted, Mikoliunas’ record means he is sure to be the centre of attention wherever he plays in weeks and months to come.
Strong
“It may be difficult but Miko is mentally strong so I believe he will cope,” he said.
“He knows he has done things wrong but they are in the past.
“What I hope is that he will learn this lesson and be more careful the next time he is in the situation.”
The Edinburgh club have appointed Steve Banks as their new goalkeeping coach, a move that is likely to end his involvement with first-team football.
“Steve had a chat with the owner Vladimir Romanov and together they decided this was the best way to go,” said
Lazlo.
“We gave Jamie McDonald his chance today and I thought he acquitted himself well.”
