Help us to help them

In memory of fun-loving Madge . . .

Hope I don’t come back
as a centipede!

By Robert Wight

GENEROUS readers donate money to our Sick Children’s Appeal for all sorts of reasons.
For the family of Castle Douglas woman Margaret McKie, who died last month aged 91, it was a way to mark her passing.
Mourners at Margaret’s cremation on January 29 were invited to make a charitable donation as an alternative to sending flowers for the service.
Between them, they raised £200. And Margaret’s daughter, Alison Muckersie (66), couldn’t think of a worthier cause than Scotland’s children to receive the cash.
Hip
Dumfries resident Alison said, “My mum was born with a displaced hip. Nowadays that’s relatively straightforward to fix, but it was a different story 90-odd years ago.
It caused her problems throughout her life.
“It was partly because of her condition that I’m her only child. And even then, I was born by Caesarean.”
Surgeons in Glasgow operated on Margaret when she was in her teens.
No cure
Although surgery improved her condition, it couldn’t provide a cure and Margaret had mobility problems all her days. She never let that hold her back, though.
Alison said, “If my mum had been born today, the technology available would have made a huge difference to her.

Fun-loving Madge.

“Given the difficulty she had early in life, I think it’s only fitting the money we collected is used to help children.”
Margaret, who was known as “Madge” to all her friends, spent most of her working life in the civil service. She was married to Jim for 45 years before he passed away in 1985.
Fun-loving Madge was known for her great sense of humour. It’s one of the things about her people will miss most.
One-liners
Alison said, “Mum was a real character and loved a laugh. Her one-liners were legendary.
“When she was in hospital once, a doctor doing the rounds asked her if she believed in God. She thought it was a bit of a strange question and told him she actually believed in reincarnation.
“The doctor was surprised and said ‘really?’ before asking her what she’d like to come back as.
“Mum replied that with all the trouble she’d had with her hip in this life, as long as she didn’t come back as a centipede, she didn’t mind!”

IF YOU have a special reason for contributing to or raising funds for our appeal then we’d like to hear from you. It could be that you’d like to thank caring staff for the treatment they’ve provided in your hour of need.
Or perhaps a relative spent time in one of Scotland’s children’s hospitals and the experience has left a lasting impression on your family’s life.
Whatever the reason, please let us know.
We’d be delighted to share your experiences with our readers.
And, who knows, it may inspire others to follow in your fundraising footsteps.
