Help us to help them

Terrible accident
in the kitchen

DONATIONS TO our sick children’s appeal have been pouring in from people from all walks of life.
But one common theme is the number of cheques and letters we’ve received from readers with personal experience of Scotland’s children’s hospitals.
Doreen Stewart, from Mastrick in Aberdeen, is one. Recently, for her 70th birthday party she asked guests to donate to our appeal rather than bring presents.
Generous party-goers contributed the fantastic sum of £305.
Doreen had a good reason to raise money for the four children’s hospitals — she’s a former patient of one of them.
When she was two years old, Doreen was involved in a terrible accident in the family kitchen.
Hot stew
A pan on the stove was knocked over, covering her in scalding hot stew.
She was treated at Aberdeen Sick Children’s Hospital and might never have got near her 70th birthday if it wasn’t for the care she received there.
She was determined to help the campaign as a way of saying thanks.
One woman from East Kilbride was inspired to send a cheque for £100
Her son had webbed fingers as a toddler and had to undergo two operations at Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill. She sent her cheque in memory of her husband, who passed away earlier this year.
Another woman, from Dunfermline, was moved to donate £20. She too has reason to be grateful to Yorkhill after they operated on her son, who had a serious bowel problem — and that was more than 50 years ago.
Moving letter
And a moving letter was sent by a Glasgow woman who, every year on her mother’s birthday donates money to charity.
This year, after reading about our appeal, she decided to give £20 on behalf of her mum, whose grandson — the donor’s nephew — has spina bifida and has been in and out of Yorkhill.
His parents were told he’d probably not live long but he’s now 22 and has turned into a wonderful young man.
We haven’t mentioned names in these stories because the families requested anonymity. But we thank them — and the many others — for their generous donations.
With your help, real progress is being made and vital equipment will be bought.
Please keep up the good work.

IF YOU have a special reason for contributing to or raising funds for our appeal then we’d like to hear from you.
It could be that you’d like to thank caring staff for the treatment they’ve provided in your hour of need. Or perhaps a relative spent time in one of Scotland’s children’s hospitals and the experience has left a lasting impression on your family’s life.
Whatever the reason, please let us know.
We’d be delighted to share your experiences with our readers. And, who knows, it may inspire others to follow in your fund-raising footsteps.
