Get your running shoes on

By Stevie Gallacher
OVER the last few months our campaign has featured the moving accounts of children battling illness against all the odds. And now our Sick Children’s Appeal needs YOU to run for THEIR lives!

In a few months, four charity runs are taking place across Scotland and, as part of our appeal, we’re asking you to get your running shoes on to raise money for our four children’s hospitals.
The first is not until September 2 so there’s plenty of time to get in shape. You can run solo or bring your friends and family along for moral support.

Getting in shape for the Great Scottish Run and raising money for our appeal, from left, David Flanigan, Robert Brownlie, James Halliday and David Wylie from Edmundson Electrical.

You could even get your colleagues to compete in the run. That’s what the staff of Edmundson Electrical in Bellshill are doing.
Sick
Five staff at the electrical goods wholesaler will be sponsored to take part in the Glasgow 10K run after driver David Flanigan and his boss David Wylie persuaded them to run as a group.
David Wylie (30) explained, “One of David Flanigan’s friends has a son who was sick a few years ago. He took part in the Great Scottish Run to raise money.
“I heard about David’s run and wanted to take part. We decided to have a go at raising some money for The Sunday Post appeal.
“It was just a case of persuading the other staff take part but they were all enthusiastic.
“I try to go to the gym a lot and do some running so I think I should be OK. The rest of the staff are trying to get in shape.
“Not everyone is pushing themselves, though. One member of staff, who shall remain nameless, seems content to finish last!
“It’s not about winning. We just want to raise as much money as possible for a good cause.”
David Flanigan (42) added, “The newborn son of a friend of mine had an infection in the valves in his heart. It was quite serious and he needed treatment at Yorkhill.
Christened
“He eventually got better but a couple of my mates and I decided to take part in the Great Scottish Run to raise money for Yorkhill.
“It worked out perfectly as the little boy was christened on the day of the run. We finished the event then went to the church.”
We need as many people as possible to take part in one of the charity runs. There are a number of options available if you want to run on Sunday, September 2. In Glasgow’s George Square, the Great Scottish Run is holding a 10K run and a half marathon.
In Edinburgh, you can take part in the five-kilometre Big Fun Run on the same day. And on September 9 the Big Fun Run comes to Glasgow.
If you want to take part in any of them and raise funds for our campaign phone Jenny Gow on 07813 720963.

IF YOU have a special reason for contributing to or raising funds for our appeal then we’d like to hear from you.
It could be that you’d like to thank caring staff for the treatment they’ve provided in your hour of need. Or perhaps a relative spent time in one of Scotland’s children’s hospitals and the experience has left a lasting impression on your family’s life.
Whatever the reason, please let us know.
We’d be delighted to share your experiences with our readers. And, who knows, it may inspire others to follow in your fund-raising footsteps.
