Next month’s sponsored walk will cover 150 miles over six days.
It’s been organised by the people behind the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival and the XV Squadron and GR4 Tornado Display Team, led by RAF Flight Lieutenant Colin McGregor — brother of actor Ewan — and Flight Lieutenant Andi McColl.
They aim to raise £20,000 for CHAS this year and need your help to set them on the way.
Stewart Buchanan, of Netherton Creative Solutions Ltd, in Buckie, is one of the prime movers behind the event.
He explained, “We’ve organised this walk to raise funds and would be delighted to have as many people as possible taking part. You don’t have to do the whole walk, even if you just come along for one day and do a few miles it all helps.”
Celebrities
The walk has already captured the imagination of hundreds of people, including some of Scotland’s top celebrities. Ewan McGregor will be joining in proceedings on Sunday, April 28 — day three of the walk — and Elaine C. Smith and Fred MacAuley will be there on day one. Fred
will be joined by his radio crew, who will be broadcasting the proceedings live on his Radio Scotland morning show.
The walk is just the first of many events being organised in 2002 between the two groups. An auction is planned for later in the year, as is a sponsored cycle along the Malt Whisky Trail, which covers several distilleries in the Speyside area, including those at Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and Cardhu.
At this year’s Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, which runs from May 3-6, collection tins and buckets will be available for donations.
The festival has become an annual event in the North-East of Scotland and celebrates traditional food,
drink and music.
The Tornado Display Team will also be holding a raffle, with all proceeds going to CHAS, after their stunt performance on Friday, May 3, at the Coothie Doo, a day of Scottish music for all the family at the Craigellachie Hotel, Banffshire.
Stewart said, “Why not come along and help us out?
“We can arrange accommodation if needed and you’ll be raising money for the new hospice as well
as seeing some of the country’s beauty spots.”
You can contact Stewart on 01542 835593 or access the festival website on
www.spiritofspeyside.com for sponsor sheets and additional information.
THE WALK’S six stages will take in some of the most beautiful sights and landscapes.
Day One will be Friday, April 26, with the walkers starting at Scotland’s only children’s hospice, Rachel House in Kinross, and making their way to Bankfoot.
Day Two is from Bankfoot to Blair Atholl.
Day Three is from Blair Atholl to Braemar.
Day Four will see the walkers moving on to Tomintoul.
Day Five takes them on to Craigellachie.
Day Six is the final hike to RAF Lossiemouth.
For anyone who feels they may not make the distance, Land Rover UK are donating two vehicles to follow the walkers over the six days
— just in case some develop weary legs!
