Parkhead’s best ever performance

By Kirsten Gray

THE KIDS at Parkhead Primary School in West Calder reckon Oor Wullie’s the bee’s knees, and after hearing about our CHAS appeal they decided to try and help.
Believing they could raise a few pounds by having a collection at the school’s annual carol concert and nativity play, they set about making it their best performance ever.

In the four weeks running up to Christmas, pupils in primary one, two and three learned the parts, made the costumes and painted scenery for the play, while the P6s and 7s practised their notes for the carol concert.
“The appeal really caught the imagination of the kids,” says head teacher Carol Gordon.
“A lot of hard work was put in and everyone had a part to play. There are no rules to say how many sheep or villagers you can have in a nativity scene — so we just incorporated as many as we could.
“The teachers were all involved and the school cook, along with a few helpers, made the teas and coffee.”
From two performances of the nativity and an evening choir service the kids managed to raise £1000.
“The audience were mostly parents and friends. We didn’t ask for entrance fees — we just demanded money from them before they left,” laughs Carol.
And in case you’re wondering, primaries four and five haven’t been left out. They’re planning something special to raise more money for CHAS around Easter.
