Why can’t his wife have bubble baths?

Q

My wife loves to soak in a bath full of bubbles but for the last month she’s been unable to. After bathing she starts to itch all over and has tried different products but they all have the same effect.

A

Allergies to perfumed soapy products are common. It may be the bubble bath manufacturers have changed the formula and your wife is now allergic or maybe her skin has become dry and is more sensitive. Try perfume-free products.

Q

I’ve had bad sciatica for three months. The pain is down the front of my leg instead of the back and there’s numbness as well.

A Persistent sciatica pain may suggest a slipped disc and so you should have this checked.

Q

I’m 68 and four years ago I had a severe bout of flu and a chest infection. I also have asthma. I’ve been prescribed various antibiotics and steroids but I remain constantly out of breath, tired and prone to further infections. I’ve lost a lot of weight too. Recent blood tests showed inflammation and a low white blood cell count. My doc hasn’t worked out what the problem is.
A

As people with asthma get older the lungs and the airways become less elastic and less responsive to treatment. Lung tests such as spirometry can find out whether the condition might be better managed as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This can mean a change of inhalers. Vaccination against flu and pneumococcal pneumonia is important. A chest X-ray is used to rule out any other lung disease.

Q

When I’m driving my right hand goes numb and I have to work my fingers to bring it back to life.

A Numbness in the hand can arise from problems in the neck, shoulder, arm or wrist. If it happens mainly when driving it may be due to the way you’re sitting.
Q I recently developed a leg ulcer and heard about a poultice of equal parts of manuka honey and liquid cod liver oil. Would this help or is there something else I should do?
A

You need to have the condition of the skin around your leg ulcer and circulation down into the leg checked. The type of treatment necessary will depend on the type of ulcer you have. Your practice nurse can do this and advise on treatment. Manuka honey is a known natural treatment for encouraging an ulcer to heal, but you’d best have a nurse look at it before going ahead.

Q

I HAVE severe acid reflux and take 30g of lansoprazole every day. My husband says I’m making things worse by eating three wafer marshmallow biscuits a day. They’re very lightweight —am I harming myself by doing this?

A I don’t think the biscuits will make a great deal of difference. You shouldn’t eat huge amounts of food at a time, especially late in the evening. You should avoid spicy or acidic foods and avoid moving quickly or bending immediately after eating. The tablets you’re on are usually very effective.
